In the ongoing saga of Mecca Bingo under the auspices of their parent company Rank Group to sue for overpaid VAT in the amount of 25.9 million, payment is expected in the first quarter of 2010. However tax authorities are appealing the tribunal decision that this should be paid back to the company, and the appeal hearing is only scheduled for April 2010. Whether this means they will receive payment or not is difficult to understand. What is understood however is that between the periods 2002 to 2005 tax years taxes were overcharged on certain types of amusement machines, and if Mecca wins this case and it paid back the money it sets a precedent for other bingo and amusement machine operators to do the same.
