$10 find turns to $1m jackpot

By Becky Turner on Monday, 21 May 2007

A single mother in the US has struck it lucky after winning big on a lottery ticket she bought with $10 (£5) she found on the floor.

Kristina Schneider works in a petrol station and had found the money on the floor of the shop just days before she won.

The 32-year-old was working in the shop to help pay back massive debts she had racked up on nine credit cards.

She was also $8,500 (£4,300) in debt after completing a degree and was in a dire situation financially.

However, all of that was about to change when she bought herself the final ticket on a roll of scratch cards, using the $10 she had found.

When she scratched off the panels she was amazed to discover that she had just won $1 million (£508,000).

"I thought someone was playing a trick on me," she said. "I was numb. I still am."

In fact, Kristina was so overcome by winning the jackpot that she had to close the shop while she ran to the toilet to throw up.

She will be given the money in 20 yearly payments of $50,000 (£26,000) to avoid going "broke again in five years".
