Albarn attacks do-gooder stars

Gorillaz star Damon Albarn has attacked do-gooder music makers such as Radiohead and Bob Geldof for using their celebrity status for social agendas.

And the former Blur frontman also criticised events such as Live8 that purported to help the poor and needy but really just served stars' egos.

"In one sense you've got this developing humanist thing that's coming out of you, which is great," he said.

"Then you're creating these massive impersonal events where you set yourself up as the subject of thousands of people's adoration. Where is the humanity in that? That's just idolatry."

He suggested that Oxford indie band Radiohead were hypocrites because they wittered on about social problems one day and went on huge stadium tours the next.

And he also questioned the extent to which Bono and Bob Geldof really cared about the plight of Africa.

"If you're so interested and care about Africa, think about the people, see them as a neighbour," he said. "Be interested in what they are interested in and don't impose your own ideas."
