By Penny Walker on Thursday, 26 Oct 2006 An 18-year-old Australian man was so upset after his mother refused to take him to bingo that he set fire to his parent's granny flat.
Luke Albert McDonald, from Fingal Valley in Tasmania, had a drink and drug problem that led to him taking such drastic action. He suffered minor burns from the blaze, the criminal court in Launceston heard.
His mother had refused to take him to bingo because he was drunk and so Luke decided to destroy the granny flat and kill himself.
After pouring petrol around the room, he lit his lighter and was blown out of the door by the resulting explosion, which caused A$30,000 worth of damage.
Luke pleaded guilty to arson and the judge sentenced him to nine months in jail, six of which were suspended.
