By Penny Walker on Friday, 20 Oct 2006 Visitors to an art gallery in Belfast will be able to play bingo while they are on the toilet.
Artists Deirdre McKenna and Cavan Fyans have worked together to link up the toilet in the Catalyst Arts Gallery in the city's College Court to Kelly's Eye bingo hall, another tenant in the same building.
So now you can grab a bingo card and a pen from next to the loo roll and listen to the caller's words as he calls the numbers.
Deidre, who used to go to bingo with her granny, said that she wanted to bring something that is considered low culture together with the gallery, which is considered high culture.
The installation is part of a wider art project called "Bring the Noise", which also includes artist workshops and live performances. Freestyle jamming, music video making and Polynesian chanting are some of the things visitors to the gallery can expect.
Deirdre used to be a director of the Catalyst Arts Gallery and was inspired by hearing the hum of bingo emanating from the bingo hall below.
"It filters up through the walls," she told the BBC. "When I was working, I would listen to the bingo. It was very distant, but always there and it became a kind of mantra."
