By Penny Walker on Friday, 28 Jul 2006 Grandfather Bert Sale of Coventry could well be the oldest bingo caller in Britain, at the ripe old age of 83.
"Bingo Bert" still regularly calls the numbers in bingo games at the city's Allesley Hall Nursing Home, despite being older than many of the residents, icCoventry reports.
"It's never really occurred to me that I'm older than a lot of the players but it's no problem," he said. "I think it's great and I intend to keep doing it for a long time yet."
Bert knows all the calls, all the way from the well known "legs 11" to the more unfamiliar "old age pension 65".
Ann Shaw, one of the nursing home's oldest residents at the age of 94, says: "We are all fond of Bert.
"We always win a prize every week so everyone wins something and Bert always reads the numbers out slowly and clearly - he's very good."
Meanwhile the popularity of online bingo has soared after the smoking ban in Scotland forced regulars to log in at home, where they can light up in peace.
