By Simon Jones on Tuesday, 27 Mar 2007 Ahead of the national smoking ban this July, one bingo hall is attempting to prepare for the changes by hosting non-smoking sessions.
The Gala Bingo club in Ranelagh Road, Ipswich, is to hold non-smoking afternoon sessions once a week, beginning in April, the Evening Star reports.
Commenting on the initiative, Christine Bailey, assistant manager at the club, said: "We will see how that goes and after a couple of weeks will most probably extend it to two days a week."
The club recently completed a survey of its customers regarding the changes and received positive feedback, she told the newspaper.
Members of the bingo industry recently launched a national petition to call on the government to take steps to improve conditions for the market.
The campaign argued that recent government legislation, including the smoking ban, and present levels of taxation, were "destroying bingo".
