By Penny Walker on Tuesday, 16 Sep 2008 A "popular" bingo hall in Ireland may have to close down if local authorities decide to go ahead with a new housing and commercial development.
The Evening Herald reports that the future of Star Bingo Hall in Crumlin is in doubt as a consequence.
Sandy Coleman, manager of the club, has raised concerns about what the closure would mean to the local community, saying that it provides an "outlet" to many women in the surrounding areas.
According to Ms Coleman, some 2,500 people are drawn to the venue each week.
"[Players] come from all over, from Kildare, Meath, Bray, Tallaght and Ballyfermot. It's a popular pastime for them," she told the newspaper.
Earlier this summer, the Electric Picnic music and arts festival took place in the Irish town of Stradbally in County Laois. During the course of the event, visitors were able to make use of a bingo tent, where experts were on hand to offer tips on the game.
