By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 4 Jul 2007 Old age pensioners in East London are attempting to make a living out of their trips to the bingo, a local newspaper has reported.
According to owners of the local East London bingos, more and more pensioners are playing in hope of winning the large payoffs on offer, which can be as much as £100,000.
"They all hope to go and win. They have slot machines, everything in these bingo halls to make your money and everything to take your money," said Babs Freestone, manager of a bingo club at an Active Age Centre, to the Ilford Recorder.
Occasionally they make serious money recently a 73-year-old pensioner from Kettering managed a substantial jackpot win of £20,000 at her local Gala club.
The unnamed winner was a woman recuperating from a recent knee operation, but her mood considerably brightened with the win.
"I was so embarrassed when I was told I had won as everybody was looking at me. However, the win is lovely," she told site bingobase.com.
