Bingo-winning granny off to France

By Sarah Smithon Monday, 14 Apr 2008

A bingo-winning grandma from south-east London is saying au revoir to the UK and heading to France with her prize money.

The 72-year-old lady, who wishes to remain anonymous, won £34,000 at the Mecca Club in Eltham Hill earlier this month and is now taking a trip across the channel to visit her daughter.

She told the National Bingo: "It's really going to change my life and I couldn't thank bingo enough if I tried.

"Now we've got the money we can say, 'Yes, I can have this' or 'Yes, I can do that' without even thinking about it. It's lovely."

The lucky lady began playing bingo in 1971 and is married with four children, who have born her seven grandchildren.

Her winnings came in the form of the National Game prize of £32,800, as well as another £2,061 from the Regional Prize, capped off with the house prize of £115.

According to the National Bingo, a number of celebrities kick-started their careers as bingo callers, including Eastenders' Shane Ritchie and Australian heartthrob Russell Crowe.
