By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 11 Oct 2006 Rock legend David Bowie has put his voice to a character in the cult children's show SpongeBob SquarePants.
The Ziggy Stardust singer will voice a character called Lord Royal Highness for an episode that will air next year.
Bowie said he and his family were thrilled that he had got a part in the "Holy Grail of animation gigs", the BBC reports. "Nothing else need happen this year - well, this week anyway," he said.
SpongeBob SquarePants follows the trials and tribulations of a sponge living inside a pineapple on the sea bed with his pet snail, Gary. It has built up a wide fanbase that includes celebrities such as Noel Gallagher and Britney Spears.
Bowie also recently appeared in the new series of Ricky Gervais' comedy Extras, and has starred in various films including 1986's Labyrinth.
The latter saw Bowie starring as Jareth, king of the goblins, working with fantastical beings created by Jim Henson - so his work on SpongeBob SquarePants will not be entirely new territory.
