By Sarah Smithon Monday, 14 Aug 2006 Pop singer Boy George donned a street cleaner's orange vest as he turned up for the first day of his community service helping New York's sanitation department.
The former Culture Club singer pleaded guilty to the false reporting of an incident earlier this year and was told he must spend five days as a garbage worker in the east coast city, where he has an apartment.
A swarm of reporters and photographers surrounded him as he worked and the unwanted attention evidently hit a raw nerve.
He said: "You think you're better than me? Go home. Let me do my community service. This is supposed to be making me humble. Let me do this, I just want to do my job."
Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, had called police to report a burglary at his home in Manhattan last year. The report was bogus and the police found cocaine in his apartment.
Unwilling to be a street cleaner, 45-year-old O'Dowd had suggested holding a fashion and makeup workshop instead.
