By Sarah Smithon Tuesday, 23 Jan 2007 Some of the UK's most distinguished actresses have been nominated for Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards being held on February 25th.
Among the nominees announced at a ceremony hosted by Sid Ganis, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Salma Hayek, are Helen Mirren, recognised for her performance in The Queen, Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal and Kate Winslet, who received her nomination for Little Children.
Meanwhile, Irish-born actor Peter O'Toole is included in the best male category, which also includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith, the BBC reports.
Commenting on his nomination for his performance in Blood Diamond, Leonardo DiCaprio, said: "To put a lot of hard work and effort into a project or a character like this and then for it to be recognised, how can it not be nice?"
The nominees were chosen following a ballot of 5,830 members of the academy in December.
