By Sarah Smithon Friday, 29 Aug 2008 British tennis has a US Open third round female representative for the first time in 17 years.
The number one player in the UK Anne Keothavong will play Russian Elena Dementieva in the Grand Slam tournament today after defeating Italian Francesca Schiavone in three sets on Wednesday.
Her 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory was achieved despite her opponent being ranked 25th seed for the Flushing Meadows-held competition.
After the match earlier this week, the British player said she was aware of the battle she faced going into the contest. "I came away with the win so I'm pretty pleased with that," she added.
Keothavong also has some links to the bingo world, as she was sponsored by PartyBingo during Wimbledon this year.
The gambling site gave the British hopeful some financial backing during the Grand Slam in SW19, which she then thanked them for in a message on the company's website following the tournament.
