By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 8 Nov 2006 Pop star Britney Spears has filed for divorce from husband Kevin Federline due to "irreconcilable differences".
News of the split comes just over two years after they married and two months after the birth of the second child, Jayden James.
The couple also have another son, Sean Preston, who was born last year.
Britney, who first hit pop stardom in 1999 with Baby One More Time, is to apply for custody of both children.
Speculation about the state of their marriage had been rife for several months and was recently fuelled when Britney appeared on David Letterman's The Late Show earlier this week without wearing her wedding ring.
The bulk of Britney's £65 million fortune is understood to be safe as Federline, a one-time backing dancer for the star, signed a prenuptial agreement before marrying her.
This is not the first failed marriage for the pop star, who married childhood friend Jason Alexander in a union that lasted all of 55 hours.
