By Sarah Smithon Tuesday, 6 Jun 2006 Punters are set to break all known betting records during the upcoming football World Cup in Germany. According to William Hill, people enjoying a flutter on World Cup matches will bet more than a million pounds for every hour of the tournament, leading to a whopping £1 billion in total. "The World Cup will shatter every known betting record," William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe told www.readabet.com. "British bookmakers alone will take over £1 billion double the turnover from the 2002 event." Of course, much of the betting in the UK will focus on England and bookies are worried that if Sven's men perform well they will be nursing bruised wallets. Star striker Wayne Rooney is likely to be the subject of many bets in over the coming weeks. William Hill has his chances of playing at 8-13, while the odds of him taking part in the World Cup Final are 25-1. Sharpe said: "Punters have stayed consistently optimistic about Rooney's chances of making it to the World Cup and with bets of up to £1,000 a time struck we are likely to pay out a six-figure sum if he is passed fit."
