Calls made for bingo smoking ban exemption

By Simon Jones on Monday, 19 Mar 2007

A significant number of people are in favour of allowing private clubs and bingo halls to allow smoking in designated rooms, according to one campaign group.

A poll conducted by Populus on behalf of Forest found that 66 per cent of adults in Scotland - where smoking in public has been banned for nearly a year - felt that bingo clubs should be allowed to provide a ventilated room for smokers.

Commenting on the situation, Brian Monteith, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said: "Thanks to the smoking ban we've seen a dramatic downturn in the number of people using bingo halls."

A number of bingo clubs in Scotland have closed and many more are facing an uncertain future because of the new legislation, he added.

Ian Burke, chief executive of the Rank Group which owns Mecca Bingo, recently acknowledged that the smoking ban set to come into effect in England and Wales in July would create a number of "challenges".
