By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 3 Jan 2007 Despite being older than a number of residents of the Wayside New Road care home in Bromsgrove, bingo caller Gordon Hayward says he will carry on calling the numbers at the home as long as he can.
The former DHSS care home inspector, who visits the home regularly each week to organise bingo games for the residents, celebrated his 80th birthday on New Year's Eve, the Bromsgrove Advertiser reports.
Helping to provide entertainment for the people at Wayside as part of the activity coordinating team, Mr Hayward says he plans to continue working as long as he is "healthy" and capable of doing so.
"I have built a good rapport with the residents in my 14 years here and they really look forward to joining in the bingo, which is one of the many fun and sociable activities organised at the home," he told the newspaper.
Earlier this year, Julie Whinstone of Southampton University told a British Psychology Society conference that bingo can help to keep people more alert as they get older, the Guardian reports.
