Charity push leads to break from tradition

By Penny Walker on Wednesday, 6 Jun 2007

A Mecca Bingo hall in Somerset is to break with tradition as it celebrates the efforts of two Mecca managers.

Louise Sharp and Jack Terry manage Mecca Bingo halls in London but on Wednesday June 6th, they will be taking part in a charity event to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The charity event will see the pair drive to every single one of the 103 Mecca Bingo halls across the UK with the aim of raising £20,000.

However, their arrival in Taunton, Somerset, on Wednesday posed a problem for Davina Warden, manager of Mecca Taunton.

The club is normally closed on Wednesday but Ms Warden has decided that it just would not be right if the hall remained closed for this special event.

"Normally Wednesday is our day off, but when we heard the rally was passing through town, we decided to throw open our doors and welcome customers new and old," she told the Somerset County Gazette.

"We hope to have a full house on Wednesday and lend our support to the cause."

Bingo players will be charged £5 to enter the club before being treated to prizes, lunch, refreshments and bingo games.

Ms Sharp and Mr Terry are hoping to raise money by taking a gift from each club they visit and passing it on to the next one they stop at.

The item will then be auctioned at the second hall, with the money going to charity.
