By Sarah Smithon Tuesday, 19 Dec 2006 Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik has revealed that his new partner is one half of the Cheeky Girls - Gabriela Irima.
Having split up with long-term girlfriend, TV weather girl Sian Lloyd, the Lib Dem spokesman on Wales and Northern Ireland has decided to make public his relationship with new partner Gabriela, who is 17 years his junior.
The 41-year-old said in a statement: "I continue to regard Sian as one of the brightest, most out-going, hard working and generous people I've had the privilege to know."
He continued by praising her work for charity, before wishing the "very best for her".
However, Mr Opik's sights clearly look set on the future and his relationship "with Gabby [which] is not a secret".
Monica Irimia, Gabriela's sister and co-performer in the Cheeky Girls, meanwhile told the BBC that the couple's affection for each other is "really genuine" while adding that her sister had "never had a proper boyfriend".
The Telegraph reports that the pair met in October and courted through the modern medium of text messages, following which they went on a range of dates including a trip to the Science Museum in London.
