England crash out on penalties once more

By Sarah Smithon Monday, 3 Jul 2006

England was cruelly knocked out of the World Cup by Portugal on Saturday, in a nail-biting match that ended with a penalty shoot-out.

The match also saw Wayne Rooney sent off and captain David Beckham leave the field injured, leaving the team without either player – or striker Michael Owen – when it came to the dreaded penalties.

The remaining England players were left blubbering on the pitch as their Iberian rivals knocked them out of a major tournament for the third time since 2000.

The game was manager Sven Goran Eriksson's last and the media didn't hesitate to put the boot in after the Swede's apologetic press conference.

"Goodbye Tosser," said the Sun. "He tossed away our cash, he tossed away our talent … now he's tossed away our World Cup dreams."

Beckham stepped down as England captain following the quarter final match, although he stressed that he wants to continue playing for his country.

"I have lived the dream," he said. "I am extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England; and for that, I will always be grateful."
