Europe's golfers hold the lead in the Ryder Cup after the United States took the first points thanks to Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
World number one Woods had hooked his first shot of the tournament into water but he and Furyk still beat Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington by one hole to take an early lead.
However, Spanish pair Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal struck back against Team US, defeating David Toms and Brett Wetterich.
Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood later beat Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to put Europe ahead of the US.
The Cup, which this year is being held at the K Club in Ireland, began with good weather following days of torrential rain.
The tournament began in 1926 and takes place every two years. Originally it was a contest between the US and Great Britain, but it was extended to include Ireland and then Europe because it was a one-sided affair (Britain only won once between 1935 and 1973).
