By Sarah Smithon Monday, 3 Sep 2007 Gambling adverts are now being allowed on television and radio following the introduction of major changes to the way in which the gaming industry is regulated.
Under the new laws, the UK's casinos, bookmakers and online betting companies come under a new regulatory body, the Gambling Commission, which is empowered to fine any organisation not acting within the rules.
According to sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe, the changes have been needed because the previous legislation - some of which dated back to 1845 - could not cover the advances in the gambling sector, with the arrival of the internet changing the face of the industry.
Mr Sutcliffe added that the new regulations would ensure that "children and vulnerable people are protected and crime is kept out".
The new advertising rules require all gambling ads to include the address of a website promoting responsible gambling, in an effort to ease concerns that the new rules would fuel gambling addiction.
