By Penny Walker on Thursday, 17 Aug 2006 A bingo hall is going nowhere despite blocks of apartments that are being built up all around it.
Bingo players at the Carlton bingo hall in Partick, Glasgow, are refusing to move even though the area is becoming more and more gentrified and Cruden Homes is building 79 luxury apartments around the hall.
However, the bingo hall's art deco façade will have to go as the building is absorbed into the more modern development around it.
"Eventually the bingo hall will be integrated into the façade," said Partick Housing Association's chief executive, Ruth Henderson. "The existing art deco façade of the bingo hall is going to disappear. Then there will be a uniform façade for the whole development."
Carlton Bingo's managing director Peter Perrins commented: "Carlton will have an enhanced entrance foyer. Once the development is completed it will be beneficial to our business."
Bingo halls in Scotland have witnessed falling customer numbers as the country's smoking ban has driven many players to online bingo so they can light up in the comfort of their own homes.
