A part-time cleaner from South Ockendon has pocketed more than £20,000 after hitting the bingo jackpot.
Bernie Gibbs was playing at the Gala Lakeside Club in West Thurrock on Thursday, July 6th when he won the Afternoon Delight National Game prize of £20,000, together with a regional prize of £486.
Bernie was at the club with his wife and daughter, but it is his granddaughter Dawn who will profit most from his winnings.
Dawn, a 26-year-old nanny, often plays bingo with Bernie and the two have an agreement to split any winnings.
"She bought a car two weeks ago and now she can pay it off," said Bernie. "She won £1,088 some time ago, which she shared with me, so now it's my turn to share. She is absolutely over the moon!"
Bernie said that his family took more convincing than he did to believe that he had won, adding that his wife, daughter and other three grandchildren "will certainly be looked after" now that he has won.
