Hammond speaks about accident

By Sarah Smithon Monday, 23 Oct 2006

Richard Hammond has spoken publicly for the first time about the horrific car accident that almost killed him last month.

The Top Gear presenter told the Daily Mirror that he was "utterly terrified" when he lost control of the jet-powered dragster he was driving at an airfield near York.

He revealed that he still doesn't know exactly what went wrong to cause the accident at almost 300mph, but that his "very last thought was 'Oh bugger, that's gone wrong. Well, we're checking out now. You've had it'".

The 36-year-old presenter, whose nickname is Hamster, has astonished fans with his recovery since the crash.

Even he admits that in the aftermath of the accident, things looked bleak for the presenter. He said: "It was 50/50 what was going to happen. I may have been dead, I may not have woken up."

Instead, he is preparing to return home to his wife Mindy and daughters Izzy and Willow for the rest of his recovery.
