Madonna has defended her decision to adopt a Malawian baby in an open letter.
One-year-old David Banda arrived at the pop star's London home this morning (Wednesday, October 18th), having arrived in the UK amid intense media scrutiny.
"My husband and I began the adoption process many months prior to our trip to Malawi," she said. "I did not wish to disclose my intentions to the world prior to the adoption happening as this is a private family matter."
The Malawi government broke a national protocol to give her a temporary custody order and critics claim that overseas adoption is not the answer for deprived children.
But Madge insisted that she had gone through the same adoption procedures that would apply to any parents and that she had not taken the decision lightly.
"After learning that there were over one million orphans in Malawi, it was my wish to open up our home and help one child escape a life of extreme hardship, poverty and in many cases death."
