By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 17 May 2006 Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is to split from his wife of four years, Heather Mills, it was confirmed today. A statement released by the couple said the split was "amicable" and cited pressure from the media as a reason behind the break-up, although it is thought that bitter arguments played their part too. "Having tried exceptionally hard to make our relationship work given the daily pressures surrounding us, it is with sadness that we have decided to go our separate ways," the statement said. "Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much." McCartney, 63, married Ms Mills, 38, four years after his former wife, Linda, died of breast cancer. The pair had a daughter, Beatrice, in 2003. If the couple divorce, Ms Mills stands to receive up to £200 million of Sir Paul's £800 million fortune. Mills apparently did not sign a prenuptial agreement before their wedding. In an interview with Vanity Fair she said that she had offered to do so but that McCartney had not allowed it.
