Bolton North-east MP David Crausby has pledged his support to a campaign calling for the abolition of VAT on the bingo industry.
Visiting Mecca Bingo in Breightmet, Mr Crausby said that bingo should not be "treated differently" to other sectors within the gaming industry - particularly following the introduction of the smoking ban later this year, the Bolton Evening News reports.
"The smoking ban will have an economic effect on bingo and is one reason we should give our support on the question of double taxation - but it would need the chancellor to do something about it in the Budget," he remarked.
Mr Crausby told the newspaper that he may pursue the matter in parliament by putting forward an early day motion.
In related news, the Bingo Association recently announced that the results of the Stop Destroying My Bingo campaign are currently being processed.
The national petition, which calls for the government to reduce the burden of taxation and regulation faced by the industry, is expected to be delivered to Downing Street when completed.
