By Sarah Smithon Thursday, 17 Aug 2006 Scottish tennis star Andy Murray beat the seemingly indestructible world number one Roger Federer in straight sets yesterday (Wednesday 16th).
Following the victory over his Swiss opponent in the Cincinnati Masters, Murray has now become the favourite to win the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, ahead of Monty Panesar, Steven Gerrard and the previous favourite, Channel-swimmer David Walliams.
Murray was only the second player to defeat current Wimbledon champion Federer this year, with only world number two Rafael Nadal previously giving Federer cause for concern.
"I made him feel uncomfortable," he said. "I just felt it was my time to win against him. I didn't get nervous at all and just kind of went with it. That's what happens when it's meant to be."
19-year-old Murray also predicted that he would one day win a Grand Slam, although he stressed that he was probably not physically strong enough to do so yet.
"I think now I'll have a bit more belief going into Grand Slams that I can go deep, although I don't think physically I'm good enough to win a Grand Slam just yet," he said. "It may take a few years."
