The music world took an unexpected twist yesterday as American singer-songwriter Katherine Schell became the first artist to put the rights to her music up for auction on eBay. The 21-year-old, from Chicago, is known for her eclectic songs and is now selling the one-year rights to "The Gravity Situation", her hit track. The deeply philosophical Schell was inspired to write "The Gravity Situation" when she was looking out of the window of an aeroplane, contemplating the mysterious gift of life. Its message is that hope springs eternal even though there is grief and suffering in this world. "The beauty of the song lies in the listener's interpretation," said the songstress-cum-pianist. "It is extremely versatile and can be used to convey a range of mixed emotions. Lyrically and musically, I aimed to portray the notion of hope." Schell has won plaudits for her music, including coveted songwriting awards from Billboard and VH1. She believes that selling the rights to her music on eBay will gain her valuable media exposure.
