By Penny Walker on Monday, 15 Sep 2008 The online bingo industry is driven by advancements in technology and legislative change, according to communications manager for the Bingo Association Steven Baldwin.
Moreover, he suggested that internet bingo is not generally played by the same group of people who visit land-based halls across the UK.
Mr Baldwin said: "The crossover between land-based players and online-based players is only between ten and 20 per cent depending on whose research you read."
Explaining further, the industry expert claimed that the web version of the numbers game is a "whole new product" and is not, as some observers would state, "cannibalising" the traditional land-based business.
Last year, the Gambling Commission conducted a survey on the popularity of bingo in the UK.
It claimed that £1,820 million was staked at bingo halls during the 2006-07 period, while the average spend was around £16.90 a night.
