By Sarah Smithon Friday, 25 Jan 2008 Oscar-nominated actor Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment this week.
The Brokeback Mountain star was discovered by his maid and a masseur, who he had booked an appointment with.
Police reported that the 28-year-old star was found face-down, naked on his bed surrounded by a selection of prescription pills and was dead when they arrived at the scene.
Friends of the Aussie actor, who began his career in popular soap Home and Away, said that he had been devastated by his split with actress Michelle Williams last September, with whom he has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose.
The pair had met on the set of Brokeback Mountain – a film they both received Oscar nominations for – but split after two years, saying that their schedules meant they did not get to see each other enough.
Speculation has mounted that his death may not have been accidental and that Heath was a recreational user of drugs, although an autopsy carried out on his body yesterday proved inconclusive.
Family of the star have denied Ledger would have ended his own life and have asked the media to withhold judgement.
