By Becky Turner on Friday, 11 Aug 2006 Jamie Gold has won this year's World Series of Poker, which took place on Thursday night at Las Vegas' Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino, and taken home $12 million.
Half a ton of $100 bills had previously been loaded onto a reinforced table next to the final table of the Texas Hold'em main event, where the last five players sat.
Television producer Gold was understandably pleased with how he performed.
"This was the best poker I've played in my life," he said. "I was lucky sometimes, but I outplayed others on a lot of other occasions. I think I played well for the last week. I protected myself well, I protected my big chips leads and I was on a good roll."
Gold also won the traditional golden bracelet that is awarded to the competition's winner each year.
His mentor for the tournament was former champion Johnny Chan, who Gold was quick to praise.
"He won't tell you, but he helped me so much," he said. "He doesn't realise how much."
