"Pride of the Nation" fly to Germany

By Sarah Smithon Monday, 5 Jun 2006

British Airways (BA) today flew the England football squad out to Germany on a mission to bring back the football World Cup.

While manager Sven Goran Eriksson's men travelled on a BA jet, which has been named "Pride of the Nation" and decorated with the Three Lions logo, the players' kit is being taken across in two 40-tonne lorries.

"Now it's on with the Armani suit and off we go," said Sven. "The World Cup starts when we get on the plane."

The team is in good spirits following its 6-0 demolition of Jamaica at the weekend. What's more, Sven has told England fans to "have faith" that star striker Wayne Rooney will be fit to play at the World Cup following his foot injury.

Rooney, who flew out with the squad to Germany today, will return to Manchester for a scan on Wednesday but should be back in Germany soon thereafter.

However, Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe has been taken in the squad in case Rooney doesn't recover in time.
