By Sarah Smithon Friday, 20 Oct 2006 Michael Schumacher is getting ready for his final Grand Prix this weekend, although rival Fernando Alonso is virtually guaranteed to win the championship.
The Spaniard needs just one point in Brazil - or for Schumacher not to take the chequered flag - to clinch his second title win in a row. However, Alonso is not counting his chickens yet, saying: "I don't think it is over at all. Until the final lap, when you know you are champion, anything can still happen and we are taking nothing for granted."
Schumacher, having clawed his way back into contention following a seemingly unassailable lead by Alonso, had a chance to seal his eighth championship earlier this month in the Japanese Grand Prix, but disaster struck for the German and his engine blew.
It meant that Alonso would have to perform badly this Sunday for him to stand a chance of winning. "I don't want to go into a race hoping my opponent will retire - that is not the way I want to win a championship," he said.
However, there is a slim chance that Schumacher could still win an unprecedented eighth title - and if anyone can do it, he can.
Statistically speaking, he is the greatest Formula One driver ever. He holds almost every record there is in the sport, from most races won in a single season to most fastest laps.
