By Penny Walker on Monday, 11 Sep 2006 The impending ban on smoking in bingo halls is expected to drive up the number of players heading online to play, according to research.
A poll of 2,667 online bingo players found that 60 per cent are smokers, which could mean a surge in web gamers, E-Consultancy reports.
The study was conducted by St Minver and follows the predictions from Mecca Bingo owners Rank Group that takings will dip by 14 per cent when the smoking ban is first enforced.
Among the other findings of the research was the fact that some 78 per cent of online bingo lovers are parents and four in ten enjoy heading to land-based bingo halls at least once a month.
It also revealed that nearly half of internet bingo players utilise chatrooms and see sites as a good way to socialise with like-minded people.
