By Penny Walker on Monday, 8 Jan 2007 With the smoking ban in public places in England and Wales to be introduced on July 1st of this year, some people in the industry have predicted that bingo players will leave the clubs and head to their computers to play online bingo.
The company notes that the introduction of the smoking ban in Scotland last year resulted in reports in a drop in attendance and prize money at some bingo clubs north of the border.
Gavin Blowman, head of marketing at bingo website Jackpotty, suggests that many smokers who do not want to face the discomfort of being forced outdoors away from the game for cigarette breaks will "inevitably" join internet bingo firms.
"Many players also prefer this because there are fewer restrictions," he said, "[and] there are no closing times and certainly no dress code!"
The government recently announced that it was to increase the minimum age permitted to buy cigarettes from 16 to 18.
