"Stop destroying my bingo" campaign launched

By Simon Jones on Wednesday, 7 Mar 2007

In an effort to help the bingo industry cope with the forthcoming smoking ban in England and Wales, the Bingo Association is launching a new campaign to address the issue of new legislation and high taxation.

The Stop destroying my bingo campaign has been created following the news that 200 bingo halls in the UK are facing closure - a trend the Bingo Association attributes to the level of taxation and new legislation placed upon the industry by the government.

Lending her support to the initiative, TV star and avid bingo player Linda Robson said: "Bingo is a key part of many communities and closing clubs will have a devastating effect on community spirit nationwide."

There are few other activities where three different generations can enjoy meeting up with their friends and receive the same amount of "excitement and success", she added.

According to the Bingo Association, the industry is treated unfairly when it comes to taxation - a burden likely to be made greater by the losses expected following the introduction of the smoking ban.

A number of bingo players in Scotland - which already has a smoking ban - recently petitioned the Scottish parliament to provide better support for bingo in local communities.
