By Simon Jones on Wednesday, 19 Jul 2006 A new study predicts that the online betting market will grow to a whopping £1.5 billion in 2010.
The popularity of online gaming is reflected in the number of bingo websites that have sprung up in recent months and the trend is only set to continue, according to information provider Screen Digest.
The report, which examined 30 leading online betting operators, found that the gross margin for the industry in the UK would rise from £660 million in 2005 to a staggering £1.56 billion in 2010.
It also predicted that the number of accounts being used to place a bet (either sports or gaming) would double by 2010.
The report's author, Ed Barton, commented: "Gambling is beginning to compete with other forms of mass entertainment – adults may now choose to play poker or bingo instead of watching television or visiting the cinema, a step change from even a handful of years ago when such gambling formats were restricted to members-only casinos or bingo parlours."
He added: "There is little doubt that attracting the cream of the online gambling industry to the UK will bring significant benefits to the economy."
