Sven confirms Wayne and Theo for World Cup

By Sarah Smithon Tuesday, 16 May 2006

England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed the names in the squad he will take to next month's World Cup in Germany.

Wayne Rooney will still be taken, despite the fact that he recently broke a metatarsal and may well not be match-fit in time for the tournament. Indeed, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned that Rooney should not be rushed into World Cup duty as it may endanger his future at Old Trafford.

And Sir Alex stressed that Rooney, who has had sessions in an oxygen chamber to aid his recovery, should be 100 per cent fit before he takes part in any games for England. "It is very important for the boy not to go there half-fit or even three-quarters fit and not do himself or England justice," he said.

Surprise teen selection Theo Walcott has also been confirmed by Sven. The 17-year-old will wear the number 23 shirt.

Other players confirmed for the England squad include Michael Owen, who is also still recovering from an injury, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
