Sven "not happy" about Newcastle rumours

The agent of former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has dismissed newspaper reports linking the Swede with Newcastle United.

Athole Still claims that the soft-voiced tactician is angered about reports that have suggested he is "targeting" the Newcastle job, where current boss Glenn Roeder is facing growing pressure amid poor results.

While acknowledging the inevitability of Sven's name being linked with top jobs in football - "such is his stature" - Still stressed that his client would never eye up the job of an under-fire manager.

"I have spoken to Sven and he is not happy at the suggestion that he has targeted Newcastle, which gives quite a different slant to the thing," he said.

"To suggest he is looking at a club where there is another professional coach in situ, it is absolute rubbish to say that," he added.

Freddy Shepherd, chairman of Newcastle, seems similarly disinterested in the rumours about Mr Eriksson, claiming he has "no intention of speaking to him".

Sven has so far resisted the temptation to jump back into the hot-seat, since leaving his post with England after the World Cup in Germany. Athole Still has in fact indicated that the "over-the-top and unacceptable criticism" that Sven received during his five-year tenure may very well encourage him to take a job elsewhere in Europe when he eventually decides to make his comeback.
