By Sarah Smithon Wednesday, 1 Nov 2006 Prince William is in hot water after he lost a machine gun at Sandhurst military academy.
The 24 year-old second in line to the throne was at firing practice when he mislaid the powerful weapon on Friday and the incident may have serious consequences for him.
It was expected that the prince was a contender for the "Sword of Honour", which is given to the most outstanding cadet in each year. However, when he returned to the range without the machine gun he got "an absolute rollicking" and a black mark next to his name.
Wills borrowed a friend's bicycle and pedalled around for nearly two hours trying to find the gun but it was eventually handed in by another cadet.
A source, speaking to the Mirror, said: "Fortunately there wasn't any live ammunition in it, but losing your weapon is still one of the worst mistakes you can make."
The gun the prince mislaid was a L86 assault rifle - a customised version of the SA80 that is capable of firing 775 rounds per minute.
