Women tend to find gambling on the internet more attractive than going to a bookmakers or a casino, an expert has said.
Brian Wright of the Remote Gambling Association claimed that females can sometimes be intimidated in traditionally male-dominated environments such as betting shops, even though moves have been made in recent years to make turf accountants more accessible to the fairer sex.
"The [online] products appeal to women a bit more; online bingo is particularly popular with women, as is poker," remarked the business director.
An increasing number of women have been taking part in remote gaming - gambling via the phone, internet or television - in recent years.
Figures from the UK Gambling Commission published this summer show that the proportion of females participating has risen from five per cent to 6.5 per cent since 2006.
One of the reasons for this may be the growth in size of the online bingo industry, driven by firms such as Foxy Bingo and Mecca Bingo.
