By Sarah Smithon Tuesday, 30 May 2006 The upcoming World Cup is a good excuse to have a flutter, and a new study shows that Britons are gearing up to bet more than £170 million over the next two months. Friendly society Liverpool Victoria reveals that around one-third of UK adults (6.7 million) will place a bet during June and July, amounting to a total of £173 million. However, the National Lottery is still likely to be more popular than the football for gambling, with the weekly draws proving popular with men and women alike. A split was revealed between the sexes regarding how much money they were prepared to bet. Men stake around a quarter of their monthly savings, with that figure falling to around ten per cent for women. Regional differences were also highlighted in the study, with people in the north-east more likely to bet. Welsh gamblers, meanwhile, are predicted to take a break as their country failed to qualify for the World Cup. In the run-up to next month's World Cup, gambling advice group Gamcare is providing support and practical help for those who are affected by problem gambling and working to ensure that betting remains enjoyable.
