Video-sharing website YouTube has become the fastest growing site in Britain, the Metro reports.

According to the results of a Nielsen/NetRatings poll, the website's user numbers increased by a massive 478 per cent between January and July this year and it now has 3.6 million users each month.

This is despite the fact that it was only founded two years ago, with experts suggesting that its success is down to the rising popularity of broadband connections and of people-powered websites, which also include social networking site MySpace.

"It is all about user-generated content. They are defining what is relevant for each other to view," said NetRatings analyst Alex Burmaster.

YouTube allows people to share home videos, as well as view music clips – last month it announced that it wanted to make every music video ever made available for free.

However, reports suggest that music publisher Universal could be set to file a lawsuit against the website for copyright infringement.
