Zodiac's popularity endures

By Sarah Smithon Monday, 17 Jul 2006

The popularity of star signs has endured for centuries, after the twelve signs of the zodiac were developed by Indo-European cultures.

Derived from the Greek word 'zodiakos', meaning "circle of little animals", the zodiac comprises the signs that we are all familiar with, such as Aquarius, Taurus and Scorpio.

The zodiac is also a representation of 12 constellations of stars that lie on the ecliptic path of the sun and astrologers use the movements of the heavens to predict what may happen to people who were born at a certain time of year.

The fortunes of the various star signs change from week to week but certain characteristics are traditionally associated with each one.

One way of thinking about this is by associating key concepts to each sign. For example, Aries can be associated with the expressions "I am", as people born under this zodiac sign tend to be individualistic and assertive.

Gemini ("I think") people are more curious and intelligent, Leo ("I rule") people tend to be bossy and dramatic and those born under Aquarius ("I know") are often eccentric, elitist and progressive.

The other star signs can be allocated the following concepts: Taurus – "I have"; Cancer – "I feel"; Virgo – "I serve"; Libra – "We are"; Scorpio – "I desire"; Sagittarius – "I seek"; Capricorn – "I build"; and Pisces – "I surrender".
