By Simon Jones on Friday, 18 Aug 2006 According to new research, men often assume female identities when they play online bingo because they think people might make fun of them if they use their own.
St Minver, the company that operates bingo sites including Virgin Bingo, found that Zoe, Alexis and Rachel were particularly popular usernames assumed by furtive fellas when playing bingo on the web.
Many men said that bingo was perceived as being a ladies' game and so they assumed female names in order to save embarrassment. But that hasn't kept them away from the online bingo sites and most said that they hugely enjoy the game.
"We were not surprised to find that men often chose to impersonate women when playing online bingo," said St Minver's managing director, Leigh Nissim. "Many of our male users believe bingo is a girl's game but just can't help playing because they enjoy it so much."
He added: "I wonder what they talk about in the chat rooms?"
Other popular usernames chosen by male bingo players were food-related, such as Crispy and Poppadom.
