Health-conscious people 'do not need to avoid fast food'

People who are worried about their fat intake do not need to shun fast food completely, an expert has insisted.

Marilyn Martin, a research dietician at the University of Glasgow, stated that people are only likely to have health problems if they eat to excess.

She told the Daily Record that having a takeaway meal as a treat is acceptable, particularly as some outlets offer healthier options.

Subway, for instance, was named as one chain which offers alternatives to meals packed with calories.

Ms Martin commented: "A fast food meal once a month is not going to cause you much harm."

She added that choosing meals which have less fat, more salad and lean meat such as chicken would be the healthiest option.

Meanwhile, fish and chip shop owner Richard Ord has highlighted the benefits of sharing nutritional information with customers.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, he said he is proud of the fact that his shop tells customers exactly what is in its food.
