New research shows Tea And Bingo are good for you

by Penny Walker

One glance out of my window at people bustling past wrapped up to the eyeballs in winter woolies and all I want to do is snuggle up indoors under a duvet, switch off my brain and watch TV with a mug of steaming hot tea!

Determined not to let my brain turn to mush this season, I have been encouraged to refocus my mind concentrating on online bingo amidst speculation that using the internet could be the key to slowing the onset of dementia.

In response to research submitted by the University of California in Los Angeles Carolyn Hitt, columnist for Western Mail, referred to bingo as an "adrenaline-fuelled" game which forced her brain to work hard to mark the numbers off as the bingo caller announces the ball numbers. She remarked that after several hours of playing bingo her synapses were still sparkling and that she would rather play a game of bingo than watch a quiz show on TV in the pursuit of giving the brain a mental workout.

Spokesman for the Alzheimer's Research Trust, Timothy Parry explains that more research is required to support the theory that using the internet could slow dementia but that it does require several mental processes to be used at the same time which makes it a "beneficial brain exercise."

So now when I play online bingo, instead of lazily letting the autodab take over, I'm poised over the keyboard to see if I can beat the dauber!

So that's my mind sharpened, so what about general health? It's no secret that drinking tea has long been a way for people to sit back and relax, but new research has shown that it may also help to prevent cancer.

Reuters reported a Japanese study conducted by Dr Toru Naganuma which claimed that people who drank more than five cups of green tea everyday saw a health benefit of up to 42% reduction in the chance of developing certain blood and lymph system cancers, compared to people drinking only one cup of green tea a day.

The study was carried out over 9 years on more than 40,000 people. Sounds quite tea-dious to me...

So there you have it, before you go into hibernation this winter, why not make a little time for tea and bingo? It could be better for you than you realised!
